Research Strategy

The Survey Strategy

By collecting and looking at information this strategy aims to produce generalisations and trends from samples of the research population. This approach can be used to describe the existing characteristics of the sample; surveys can also be written to test models and theories.

Methods which exist in survey research include the use of interviews and self-completion questionnaires which mainly provide the basis for quantitative analysis. As this strategy is closely associated with sociology and looking at entire societies/groups it is appropriate for the research question involving the human trust in Bitcoin.

The Ethnography Strategy

Also looking at social behaviour the ethnography strategy aims to shed light on individual’s motivations/ intentions and actions by direct observation of a member of a society in their natural setting.

Methods for ethnographical direct observation are “long-term participant observation, interviewing and qualitative analyses”. Bechhofer & Paterson (2000) go on to write that “total immersion in field settings [are] necessary”, due to the five-month time-limit of this dissertation the method of total immersion was unrealistic yet the benefit of insiders’ views was gained through interviewing and qualitative analysis.
